Vajehgadh is a small suburb of Tharad. A natural water way (has water only during monsoon) that streams water from Tharad and Vajehgadh lays on the outskirts of this town. Nomadic families belonging to Gwariya, Bharthari, Vansfoda communities have a settlement next to this water body. The recent rains and floods saw water gushing down this stream that broke its banks. These families took whatever they could and fled for their lives. They found shelter on the second floor of a building that was under construction. The families  returned to their homes when the waters receded after four days. There were no signs of homes of the Bharthari families, everything they had was swept away. The Gwariya whose homes were in a better condition than Bharthari found their homes to be flooded, all their household and livelihood stuff was floating. 

Gwariya needed some support as an immediate measure hence VSSM’s Shardaben provided them with food grains first, later vessels  and tarpaulin were also given.

Maliben and her husband rent material need to make Mandap ( makeshift structures for special occasions). The couple had invested a lot of money in the purchasing the goods. Now all the bamboo, yards and yards of cloth, fans, mattresses, lights everything was drenched in water and rendered useless. The Gwariya families make their living by selling imitation jewellery and cosmetics now all that stuff was wet not fit to be sold. The merchants from whom these families and burrowed money and the goods wasn’t going to consider this loss so how do we earn our living now? was the question they stared at. Its a very difficult situation these Gwariya families,  who until now earned a dignified living, have landed into. VSSM is committed to help them earn a dignified living.

વજેગઢગામ હવે તો થરાદનો જ હિસ્સો કહી શકાય. થરાદ અને વજેગઢગામનું પાણી જે વહોળામાંથી પસાર થાય તેની બાજુમાં જ વિચરતી જાતિના ગવારીયા, ભરથરી, વાંસફોડા પરિવારો રહે. તાજેતરમાં આવેલા પુરના કારણે વહોળામાં પુષ્કળ પાણી આવ્યું અને ભરથરી અને ગવારીયા પરિવારોની વસાહતમાં પાણી ફરી વળ્યું. પાણીનું સ્તર વધી રહ્યું હતું છેવટે આ પરિવારો હાથમાં સમાય એટલી વસ્તુ લઈને વસાહતમાંથી બહાર નીકળી ગયા. રોડની બાજુમાં બની રહેલાં એક મકાનમાં આવીને એના બીજા માળે આશરો લીધો. ચાર દિવસ એમાં જ બેસી રહ્યાં પાણી ઓસર્યા પછી વસાહતમાં ગયા ત્યારે ભરથરી પરિવારો જે છાપરામાં રહેતાં હતા એ છાપરાં તો રહ્યા જ નહોતાં. જયારે ગવારીયા પરિવારોના ઘરોમાં ખુબ પાણી ભરાયું હતું. સામાન બધો એમના એમ રહ્યો હતો પણ બધું પલળી ગયું હતું. કપડાં, ગોદળા અને ધંધાનો સામાન પલળી ગયો હતો.

ગવારિયાની સ્થિતિ પ્રમાણમાં ઠીક ઠીક પણ કુદરતે એવી થપાટ મારી હતી કે એમાંથી કેમના બેઠા થવાશે એ પ્રશ્ન સૌથી પહેલાં થયો. ઘરમાં થોડું ધાન ભરેલું હતું એ ધાન પણ પલળી ગયું હતું. vssmના કાર્યકર શારદાબહેને સૌ પ્રથમ અનાજ આપ્યું. પછી તો તાડપત્રી અને વાસણ પણ આપ્યા.

વસાહતમાં રહેતાં મલીબેહને અને એમના પતિએ ખુબ મહેનત કરીને મંડપનો સામાન ખરીદ્યો હતો એ તમામ સામાન પાંચ દિવસ પાણીમાં રહ્યો. પંખા, ગાદલાં વગેરે તમામ ચીજો બધું જ પલળી ગયું. ફરી કામ આવે એવું પણ ના રહ્યું.. તો ગવારીયા પરિવારો જે શૃંગાર પ્રસાધનો વેચાતા એ પણ પાણીમાં ખરાબ થઇ ગયા. આ પરિવારો કહે છે એમ ખુબ નુકશાન થયું. જે વેપારી પાસેથી ઉધારીમાં સામાન લાવતા અને વેપાર કરતાં એને કશું ચૂકવીશું નહિ તો નવો સામાન ક્યાંથી મળશે.. અને નવો સામાન નહિ આવે તો જીવશું કેમના? ખુમારીથી જીવતાં આ પરિવારો ખુબ વિપરીત પરિસ્થિતિમાં આવી ગયા છે. vssm આ પરિવારોની સાથે છે અને એમને ઝડપથી બેઠા કરવામાં પણ નિમિત બનશે.

VSSM relief kits for the nomadic families of Denalkot.

Denalkot village of Tharad in Banaskanta has a settlement of the nomadic Bharthari families. The settlement is on higher grounds hence the recent natural disaster did not flood the homes of these families but the high velocity winds did blew away their makeshift homes. The Denalkot village was flooded with waters from catchment areas and heavy rains.

The settlement has no drinking water. While it was raining Gangaben Bharthari went to the village to fetch some drinking water. She wasn’t expecting the water flow to be so rapid, caught unawares she was swept away the gushing flow. Three days later when the waters receded a bit search for Gangaben began. Three days later her dead body was found. But the Denalkot panchayat refused to record a Panchnama, the reason they cited was “Gangaben did not belong to our village. She and her husband were here for begging  since last three months only. The other nomadic families were witness to the fact that Gangaben died in Denalkot but who listens to the nomads?? Only if the Panchnama is registered in Denalkot will her husband receive compensation from the government.

“Had I got some money from the government I would have bought some house to stay, but nomads and luck do not go together!!!” said her husband.

VSSM gave these families  the relief kits required to to provide relief from the calamity. VSSM’s Shardaben tried her level best to  get a Panchnama recorded but Denalkot Panchayat’s attitude remained very discouraging. Waiting for the dawn when the nomadic families receive the same treatment as other individuals do!!!

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદ તાલુકાના ડેનલકોટગામમાં ભરથરી પરિવારો રહે છે. આ પરિવારોનો વસવાટ ગામના ઊંચાળવાળા ભાગમાં ૨૮ જુલાઈના રોજ આવેલા પૂરમાં આ પરિવારોને કોઈ નુકશાન ના થયું પણ વાવાઝોડાએ એમના છાપરાં ઉડાળી દીધા.

પૂરનું પાણી આખા ગામમાં પ્રસરી ગયેલું. વસાહતમાં પીવા પાણી નહિ. આવામાં ગંગાબહેન ભરથરી પીવાનું પાણી ભરવા માટે ઉપર વાસમાંથી નીચાણવાળા વિસ્તારમાં આવ્યાં પણ પાણીનો પ્રવાહ ખુબ હતો એમાં ગંગાબહેન તણાઈ ગયા. પાણી ઓસર્યા પછી એમની શોધ ખોળ શરુ કરી. ત્રણ દિવસે લાશ મળી. પણ ડેનલકોટ ગામની પંચાયત એમના મૃત્યુનું પંચનામું કરવા તૈયાર નથી. પંચાયતના કહેવા પ્રમાણે, ‘ગંગાબહેન અમારા ગામના વતની નથી એટલે અમે એમનું પંચનામું ના કરીએ. ‘વિચરતી જાતિનું તો કોઈ જ ગામ નથી વળી છેલ્લા ત્રણ મહિનાથી ગંગાબહેન અને એમના પતિ આ વિસ્તારમાં ભિક્ષાવૃતિ અર્થે આવેલા અને આ અકસ્માત થયો. ડેનલકોટના બીજા ભરથરી પરિવારો ગંગાબહેનનું મૃત્યુ ડેનલકોટમાં જ થયું છે એવી સાક્ષી પૂરે પણ એમની વાતનું ગામમાં કેટલું ઉપજે? અહિયાં પંચનામું થાય તો સરકાર દ્વારા ગંગાબહેનના પતિને એક રકમ મળે. એમના પતિ કહે એમ, અગર ગંગાના મર્યાના પૈસા આવે તો ક્યાંક ખોલી લઇ લેત. પણ અમારું (વિચરતી જાતિનું) નસીબ જુઓ..’

In the villages of  Khangarpur and Bhoradu of Banaskantha’s Tharad Vansvadee families stay on the banks of the village lake. The situation that followed the consistent rains and brought flooding waters flooded the lake. The water swept way the ones and belongings of these families. It also swept away the livelihoods of these families. The bamboo and cane purchased to make baskets, the goats the had were all swept away in the floods. Takhuben of Bhoradu say, “we have lost everything.”

VSSM provided the food grains, tarpaulins, vessels as immediate relief. VSSM is also committed to help these families  rebuild their livelihoods and spring back to their normal lives. The natural calamities of such gravity has an enormous impact on the lives of such communities who survive on the margins. They don’t own much to lose but all they own is enough to help them survive on daily basis…..imagine losing that thread to survival….

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદ તાલુકાના ખંગારપુર અને ભોરડુંગામમાં વાંસવાદી(વાંસફોડા) પરિવારો તળાવની પાળે રહે. ૨૮ જુલાઈના રોજ આવેલાં પૂરમાં આ પરિવારોને નુકશાન ના થયું પણ સતત વરસાદના કારણે તળાવ ભરાઈ ગયું. વળી તળાવની બહાર પુરના પાણીનું દબાણ પણ ખરું આમ તળાવની પાળ તૂટી અને આ પરિવારોનું સર્વસ્વ લુંટાઈ ગયું. વાસણ, કપડાં, ગોદળા સાથે આખું છાપરું તણાઈ ગયું.

vssm દ્વારા ખંગારપુર અને પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય વાંસમાંથી સુંડલા ટોપલા બનાવવાનો સાથે સાથે બકરીઓ પણ પાળે અને એનું ઊન અને દૂધ વેચીને પણ થોડું ઘણું કમાય. પણ તળાવની પાળ તૂટી એમાં એમના બકરાં અને વાંસ તણાઈ ગયો. ભોરડું ગામના તખુબેન વાંસવાદી કહે છે એમ, ‘અમારું બધું જ તણાઈ ગયું.’ vssmએ આ પરિવારોને અનાજ, વાસણ અને તાડપત્રી આપી. એમના વ્યવસાયો પણ ફરી બેઠા થાય એ માટે vssm મદદ કરશે. કાળનું ચક્ર આ પરિવારોની માઠી અવદશાને વધારે માઠી કરતુ ગયું. આવામાં એમને આર્થીકની સાથે સાથે માનસિક રીતે બેઠા કરવાનું પણ કરવાનું છે.

The nomadic families belonging to Gwariya and Devipujak communities have a settlement in the village of Pavdasan in Banaskantha’s Tharad. The settlement is situated at a distance from the village some houses were on a bit higher grounds while some on the plains. The families were in deep sleep, in the middle of the night gushing flood waters submerged their cots when they came to know of the floods.  

The Gwariya earn their living by selling imitation jewellery and cosmetics while Devipujak families make stoves etc. from tin cans. The economic conditions of these families is very week but they had made home of bricks and wood. Their homes were flooded with 6-7 feet water. The houses developed cracks. All the material and goods they had stored for selling was rendered useless. With ongoing festivals and major festivals approaching  the material stored was quite substantial. The loss has been immense.

As a result of the cracks that have developed in the building, staying in them is also impossible because there are chances of the structures collapsing. The families have requested support from VSSM to enable them restore their lives. As an immediate response VSSM reached these families with food grains, vessels, tarpaulins. The families are now staying under these tarpaulins. VSSM has also charted out a rehabilitation plan for these families to help them begin earning.  VSSM will be providing them with interest free loans.

We are grateful to all of you who have stood by us in rushing the relief aid to these families.

vssm દ્વારા પાવડાસણગામમાં રહેતાં વિચરતા પરિવારોને તત્કાલ રાહત કીટ આપવામાં આવી હવે તેમનાં વ્યવસાયને ફરી બેઠા કરવા લોન આપવાનું પણ vssm દ્વારા આયોજન થયું.

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદતાલુકાના પાવડાસણગામમાં ગવારીયા અને દેવીપૂજક પરિવારો વસવાટ કરે. ગવારીયા બંગડી- બોરિયા વેચે અને દેવીપૂજક પતરામાંથી ચુલા, ડબ્બાના ઢાંકણ બનાવે. મૂળ ગામથી દુર કેટલાક પરિવારો ટેકરા પર તો કેટલાક નીચાણવાળા ભાગમાં રહે. તાજેતરમાં બનાસકાંઠામાં આવેલા પુરા વખતે રાતે વાળું કરીને આ પરિવારો સુતા હતાં ત્યાં ખાટલા નીચે પાણી આવ્યાં ત્યારે ખબર પડી કે પુર આવ્યું છે. 

આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નાજુક પણ મહેનત કરીને ઇંટોના કાચા ઘર આ પરિવારોએ બનાવ્યાં હતાં. જેમાં પુરના પાણી લગભગ ૬ થી ૭ ફૂટ જેટલાં ભરાયા. મકાનોમાં તિરાડ પડી ગઈ. પુરના પાણી ઓસર્યા પણ ધંધા માટેનો સામાન પલળીને ખરાબ થઇ ગયો. દશામાંના વ્રત હોવાના કારણે કટલરીનો ઘણો સામાન ગવારીયા પરિવારોએ ખરીદી રાખેલો. જે પાણીમાં પલળી ગયો. જયારે દેવીપૂજક પરિવારો તો લોખંડમાંથી બનાવેલી ચીજો ઘરની બહાર જ મુકતા એમાં રાતના પાણી આવ્યું જેમાં એમનો ઘણો સામાન તણાઈ ગયો. ખુબ નુકશાન થયું. 

મકાનમાં તિરાડ પડી ગઈ હોવાથી મકાન ગમે ત્યારે તૂટીને નીચે પડી જાય એમ હોવાથી કોઈ મકાનમાં રહેવા ના જાય vssm પાસે અ પરિવારોએ ફરી બેઠા થવા માટે મદદ માંગી. આપણે તત્કાલ અનાજ, વાસણ અને તાડપત્રી આપી. તાડપત્રી મળતા એમણે તત્કાલ છાપરાં બનાવી દીધા અને એમાં રહેવાનું શરુ કર્યું. પણ તત્કાલ મદદની સાથે સાથે એમના વ્યવસાયને થયેલા નુકશાન માટે એમને વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપવાનું પણ જરૂરી હતું. vssm દ્વારા એનું પણ  આયોજન થયું..

The Vasvadee settlement in Mongrol suffered  tremendously during the recent floods in North Gujarat. The families literally had to run for their lives. Their homes and livelihoods were washed away.  These Vansvadebe’s still practice their traditional profession of basketry. The raw materials for basketry, the baskets they had made everything was either swept away or decayed and rendered useless. The material remained submerged  in water for 5-6 days making it useless for any use. The families are absolutely broke with no raw material, surviving till livelihoods are restored is a big issue facing them.

The families called Shardaben for help. They were stranded in waist  deep waters and needed food and material to build a roof. On 10th the relief material reached them. For now the families found relief from hunger pangs. But what happens in future worries them.

On 24 August we had a meeting with all the nomadic families in the region who had lost their livelihoods in the recent natural calamity. The families are prepared to work hard to build up their livelihoods again and VSSM is committed to support them restore their livelihoods. VSSM will be providing them with interest free loans.

પૂરઅસરગ્રસ્ત માંગરોળમાં રહેતાં વિચરતા પરિવારોને vssm એ મદદ પહોંચાડી..

માંગરોળમાં વાંસવાદી પરિવારો વસવાટ કરે. બનાસકાંઠા જિલ્લાનાં અન્ય ગામોની જેમ વરસાદ વાવાઝોડા અને ઝાલોર પટ્ટાનાં પાણી ભરાતાં વાંસફોડા પરિવારો માંડમાંડ જીવ બચાવી નાઠા. વાંસવાદીઓએ તૈયાર કરેલ સૂંડલા, ટોપલી, ટોપલા પલળીને ખરાબ થઇ ગયા. લણણીની સિઝનમાં સુડલા, ટોપલાની જરૂર પડે અને એ માટે વાંસફોડા પરિવારો વાંસ લઇ આવેલા. આમ તો એમનું કામ જ વાંસમાંથી સુડલા ટોપલા બનાવવાનું પણ પુરના પાણીમાં વાંસમાંથી બનાવેલો સામાન પલળી ગયો અને કાળો થઇ ગયો. હવે આ સામાન કોઈ ખરીદવાનું નથી. સર્વસ્વ લુંટાઇ ગયું. કોઈ બચ્યું નથી. વાંસ પણ નહિ! સિઝન આવશે માલ ક્યાંથી લાવીશું? હવે દાડા કેમ જશે ?

અત્યારે કેડ સમાણા પાણી ભરાયેલાં છે. છોકરાઓ ભીખ માંગવાય ક્યાં જાય ? ચો તરફ પાણીમાં, રસ્તો ક્યાં હતો એય ખબર પડતી નથી. આવી પરિસ્થિતિમાંથી બહાર આવીને vssmનાં કાર્યકર શારદાબહેનને અનાજ અને છાપરું બનાવવા મીણીયું આપવા વિંનંતી કરી જે તા. ૧૦મી એ તેમને આપ્યું. મનમાં હાશ થઇ. પણ પાછા બેઠાં થવામાં હજુ ઘણો સમય જશે.

પૂરના પાણીમાં એમના વ્યવસાયને જે નુકશાન થયું છે એમાંથી એમને બેઠા કરવાના છે. તા.૨૪ ઓગસ્ટના રોજ આ વિસ્તારના તમામ પરિવારો સાથે ફરી બેઠા થવા શુ કરવું એ અંગે બેઠક થઇ. કુદરતની આ થપાટ કારમી છે પણ મહેનતથી બધું પાછું મળશે એવો એમને વિશ્વાસ છે. vssm આ પરિવારોને બેઠા કરવા વગર વ્યાજથી લોન આપશે અને એમણે ફરી કમાતા કરશે.. vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા આદરણીય શ્રી નીમેશભાઈ સુમતિ અને આદરણીય શ્રી રમેશભાઈ કાચોલિયા આ કામમાં મદદરૂપ થયા છે જેમના અમે આભારી છીએ.
