Banaskantha is a rain starved region, its a region that hardly receives any rains, water both for drinking and farming is always an issue here. A natural calamity and that too of floods in this region is hard to imagine. Villagers and city dwellers who had pucca houses climbed on the top of their terraces and roofs but those who survived in a hutments and shanties had nowhere to go!! These families had no time to gather whatever little they owned, as the water rushed too fast giving them little time to reach to safe grounds. Someone managed to grab a tarpaulin, there were families that sat under this tarpaulin for two days and a night on a road that was at some higher level. Within no time the water all-around turned the arid and thorny region into a sea. The low pressure accompanied by wind gush brought strong winds blowing away roofs of numerous houses. The families survived in extremely tragic conditions for a week.

During the rains and flood all the contacts with the families
VSSM works with was lost. Once the waters subsided and mobile connectivity was established people began calling up asking for food. These families are daily wage earners and depend on their everyday earnings to buy food., floods meant no work and hence no food. Infact every where around there was nothing but water and destruction caused by the floods. VSSM spoke to its group of well-wishers as an immediate response to the disaster was required. The call was responded immediately as affirmations and support quickly began pouring in.
Respected Shri. Sudhirbhai Thakarshi from Mumbai donated Rs. 10 lakhs for relief and rehabilitation of the affected. Shri. Kishorbhai Mariwala committed Rs. 1 lac. Our very dear duo from Mumbai Shri. Pradipbhai Shah and Shri. Rashminbhai Sanghvi, who have always stood by us gave us a green signal to go ahead and do all that is required. With ‘Friends of VSSM’ we just need to focus on work rest all is taken care by them!!!
Shri. Namrataben Shodhan, popular artist from Ahmedabad and her mother our respected and dear Bimlaba prepared and donated more than 40 grain kits. Bimlaba, who is 81 years young personally monitored the entire process of packing the kits and promised to be with VSSM whenever she is needed, even if its middle of night!!

We also received generous contributions from Dimpleben and her friends for the food kits. Rupeshbhai from Angle Group and his friends also stood by us in this time of need.
Sadvichar Parivar Trust, is like our sister organisation and in this time of need it stood by us like a true sister does.
I am truly grateful to all of you for standing by us and extending your support and cooperation in this time of unforeseen circumstances and need.
VSSM has provided food kits, tarpaulins, blankets etc to 1000 families. Still around 500 families are in need of food and tarpaulins in Dhanera and Sui village. We are sure with patrons and well-wishers like you all we shall be reaching these families soon.
Once the relief operations are over we will be able to estimate the rehabilitation efforts needed to bring these already deprived and marginalised
nomadic families back on their feet.
So far VSSM has reached 1000 families with the relief material the details of which we shall be uploading on our website by next week. The relief operations can also be seen on our website.

બનાસકાંઠામાં જ્યાં ક્યારેય પાણી ભરાતું ન હતું એવા વિસ્તારમાં જળપ્રલયે તારાજી સર્જી . આવામાં પોતાના પાકા ઘરોમાં રહેતા પરિવારો તો જીવ બચાવવા ઘરના ધાબા પર ચડી ગયા. શક્ય એટલું બચાવવા સૌએ કોશિશ પણ કરી. પરંતુ, જેના માથે પાકું છાપરું જ નથી એનું શુ? રોડની બાજુની જગ્યામાં કે ગામથી નીચાણવાળા ભાગમાં રહેતાં પરિવારોના છાપરાંમાં તો પાણી એવું ધસમસતું આવ્યું કે કશુ બચાવવાનો સમય જ ના રહ્યો. જીવ લઈને ઉંચાણવાળા ભાગમાં સૌ નાઠા.. પ્લાસ્ટીકના મીણીયાનો એક ટુકડો હાથમાં આવ્યો એને માથે ઢાંકી બે દિવસ અને રાત બેસી રહ્યા.. ચારેબાજુ દરિયો. કોણ એમની પાસે આવે અને એમના હાલ પૂછે. વળી પવન પણ ખુબ ફૂંકાય એટલે જેઓના છાપરાં ઉંચાણવાળા વિસ્તારમાં હતા ત્યાં પવન છાપરાને ઉડાળીને લઇ ગયો. કેવી કરુણ હાલમાં આ પરિવારોએ એક અઠવાડિયું વિતાવ્યું. પાણીના પુર ઓસર્ય એટલે ખાવાનાની માથાકૂટ. ટ્રેક્ટર જેવા ભારે વાહનો પ્રવાહે ઉથલાવી દીધા ક્યાંક ડૂબેલા ટ્રેક્ટરનાં પૈડા એ ડૂબી ગયાની એંધાણી આપતાં હતા. આવી તરાજીમાંથી આ પરિવારોને બેઠા કરવાનું તો કરવાનું જ છે પણ પ્રથમ એમને અનાજ અને અન્ય જરૂરી ચીજો આપવાનું જરૂરી હતું.
vssm બનાસકાંઠામાં જે પરિવારો સાથે કામ કરે છે એ પરિવારોનો તો પુર દરમ્યાન સંપર્ક પણ નહોતો થતો પણ જેવું પાણી ઓસર્યું અને સેલફોનનું કવરેજ આવ્યું લોકોએ ખાવાનું આપવા રાવ કરી. vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા સૌ સ્વજનો સમક્ષ આ બાબત મૂકી અને સૌનો સહયોગ મળવાનું શરુ થયું. મુંબઈના આદરણીય શ્રી સુધીરભાઈ ઠાકરશીએ તુરત જ આ પરિવારોના રીલીફ અને રિહેબિલિટેશન માટે ૧૦ લાખ તો શ્રી કિશોર મારીવાલાએ તત્કાલ ૧ લાખ આપવાનું વચન આપ્યું. મુંબઈના આદરણીય અને પ્રિય એવા શ્રી પ્રદીપભાઈ શાહ અને શ્રી રશ્મિનભાઈ સંઘવી તો કંઈ પણ તકલીફમાં અમારી સાથે જ હોય બસ એક વખત કહ્યું અને કામમાં આગળ વધવાની લીલી ઝંડી મળી જાય.. અમારે કામ કરવાનું બાકીની ચિંતા નહિ કરવાની એવી ભાવનાથી ‘ફ્રેન્ડસ ઓફ vssm’ મુંબઈમાં કામ કરે અને એટલે જ અમે આ કામ કરી શકીએ. આ સિવાય અમદાવાદમાંથી જાણીતા કલાકાર આદરણીય શ્રી નમ્રતાબેન શોધનના માતૃ શ્રી અને વહાલાં બિમલા બા એ પણ ૪૦ ઉપરાંત અનાજની કીટ તૈયાર કરીને આપી. ૮૧ વર્ષના બીમલાબા એ જાતે ઉભા રહીને આ બધું તૈયાર કરાવ્યું અને vssm ના કોઈ પણ કામ માટે અડધી રાતે પણ મને યાદ કરશો તો હું હાજર હોઈશ એવો સધિયારો આપ્યો. સતસંગ પરિવાર અને શ્રી કિરીટભાઈ શાહ તો હંમેશા અમારી સાથે છે.. સદવિચાર પરિવાર અમારી ભગીની સંસ્થા અને ભગીનીને છાજે એમ આ કામમાં સહયોગી બની. ડિમ્પલબેન અને એમની સાથે સંકળાયેલા મિત્રોએ પણ અનાજની કીટ માટે ઘણો મોટો આર્થિક સહયોગ આપ્યો. એન્જલ ગ્રુપના રૂપેશભાઈ અને મિત્રો પણ આ તકલીફની ઘડીમાં આ પરિવારો સાથે રહ્યાં. આ સૌ વહાલા સ્વજનોના સહયોગથી જ આ બધું થઇ શક્યું જે માટે વિચરતી જાતિઓ વતી હું સૌનો આભાર માનું છું.
૧૦૦૦ પરિવારોને આપણે અનાજ, વાસણ અને તાડપત્રીનું વિતરણ કર્યું.. હજુ પણ ધાનેરા અને સુઈગામમાં રહેતાં ૫૦૦ ઉપરાંત પરિવારોને કિટની જરૂરિયાત છે. બધું પાર પડશે એવી શ્રદ્ધા છે.. હાલ પુરતું રાહતનું કામ ચાલી રહ્યું છે.. રાહત પછી સૌથી વધારે અગત્યનું કામ એમના પુનઃવસનનું છે અને એ પણ સરસ રીતે પાર પડશે એવી શ્રદ્ધા છે..
