Since the past several years certain number Bharthari families come and stay-put in the Mahadeviya village of Banaskantha’s Deesa block The Bharthari for generations have earned their living from playing the Ektara/Ravanhatta, the families having new born baby in the house host the Bharthari to sing lullabies. The Bharthari sing lullabies and bless the newborn!! In exchange they were given old clothes, grains and some money . But with changing times barring few exceptions, hardly anyone calls Bharthari families to welcome their newborns. Heirs of King Bharthari, the population of this community is very less in Gujarat and their settlements are hardly any. The community is very timid by nature hence their settlements are at at distance from the villagers. Their homes are nothing but shanties made from sarees and old clothes. Their homes hardly provide them any protection from elements or prevailing seasons. Whenever the villagers ask them to move they dismantle their homes and move to other place.
The floods of 2015 badly affected these families. Their homes were blown away by the torrential winds and their belongings were swept away in the floods. Once the water receded the families requested for food and tarpaulins.

VSSM was quick to respond to this and such other requests. With the support of our well wishers we immediately prepared relief kits consisting of food grains, kitchen essentials and tarpaulins. On 8th of August 2015 the Bharthari families of Mahadeviya were provided the relief kits.
