Meer families stay on the outskirts of Miyal and Thara villages in Banaskantha’s Tharad block. The families work as agricultural labourers, own some small cattle goats and sheep. The income from selling cattle milk and sheep wool substituted their family income. Meer are an extremely hard working community and always stay on the outskirts of the any village..
On 28th July the unprecedented floods the region experienced, took away everything these families owned including their cattle. The roaring waters swept away the cattle that were housed in the hedges. The loss they suffered was immense. They spoke to the panchayat about the loss of their cattle wealth. The Sarpanch here is a noble man and gave them the required written document. When the families approached the TDO with the document they were asked to produce the evidence to prove they belong to Miyal and Thara. The families have ration cards and voter ID cards but they are from the village Laakhni where they spend major part of the year. The officials are quite helpful and know VSSM and its activities but in this case they confessed their helplessness.
The families are neither complaining not showing any discontent. “What do we do, our lives are like animals, we cannot tie the animals and we cannot tie ourselves. We need to wander in search of work…so how can we blame the government….they must have some constrains of their own….” such sensibility and wisdom..
VSSM provided the relief kits to these families. We also plan to support the families to rebuild their livelihoods..

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદ તાલુકાના મિયાલ અને થરામાં મીર પરિવારો ગામની સીમમાં છાપરાં નાખીને રહે. ગામના ખેતરમાં મજૂરી કરે સાથે સાથે ઘેટાં- બકરાં પણ રાખે અને ઘેટાં અને બકરાંના ઊનનો વેપાર કરે, બકરીનું દૂધ ગામમાં વેચે અને આ પશુઓનું ખાતર ખેડૂતોને વેચે. ખુબ મહેનતુ પ્રજા. ગામની સીમમાં જ રહે.
